Analysis of Different Genre

The next thing researched was into different genres of magazine's that do their job effectively, and how their techniques attract their audience. I have chosen the October 2003 issue of Smash Hits. Smash Hits’ key demographic is girls under 15, it not only does this magazine have pop music content but it is also somewhat of a gossip magazine. The first thing to notice is that there is a lot going on. There are many different fonts and colours, it is far too busy for a more mature audience but it is very appealing to young girls who are attracted to this style. The cover photo is of two ‘Rock Chicks’, and from their styles and expressions the audience assume that the magazine is more mature than it actually is so they are more likely to buy it. The colours are very vibrant and eye catching so it will standout on a shelf. Smash Hits targets and captures its target audience very well and I will need to use the same ideas to apply to my genre of music. I think that in general, if you go into a shop with Smash Hits in mind, then it will stand out, but if you into a shop with a more indie magazine, that will stand out more. In order to make my magazine stand out it will have to be bolder and have something different to the other magazines of the same genre like NME and Q.
