6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Photoshop played a very big part in my coursework, as every product was created on this. I had previously used Photoshop in other work and so already had a vast knowledge of how to use the programme. However, since doing this coursework I have developed many other skills from this programme that made my magazine look professional and of a high standard. I learned these through internet tutorials and asking the help of the media technician in college. Examples these skills are editing photographs using the healing brush tool, easily removing background using the eraser tool and replacing the colour of things using the colour replacement tool.

I used a Nikon Digital SLR camera a lot for photo shoots and most of the images in my magazine were taken on one of these. I used a SD memory card to transport the images from my camera to my laptop and desktop in college. I have used this camera a lot before due to my art work, but I did learn a little more about it, for example how to use macro to focus on close detail in the image.

I used dafont.com a lot throughout my coursework. They have thousands of different styles of font with many different genres. Luckily, they had many rugged looking fonts that matched perfectly with my rock genre. I only discovered this website after starting this project through my teacher, without it my magazine would not of looked so professional or realistic.

Blogger.com is the site I used to document my progress throughout my whole coursework. I had never used it before this so I had to get to terms with it first. However, I found it very simple and easy to use, the fact that you get your own blog number was very helpful. Also, I found the auto-save feature saved me a lot of work that could have been potentially lost due to a faulty laptop. This site helped me to explain everything I had done easily with precise dates and times through images and text.

I used the internet a lot throughout the coursework also to do a research. This research was key to my magazine as it gave me something to work from. I learned that the internet is an easy source of so many useful resources From the internet I gained:
- Statistics about Kerrang!
- Examples of front covers
- Examples of contents pages
- Examples of double page spreads
- Information about distributors and publishers

Slideshare allowed me to put some of my research analyses from Powerpoint into an interactive slideshow of my work. I had never used this before the start of this coursework and found it a very interesting and different way to display my work.

Double Page Spread Continued

Next, I will place my main heading onto my double page spread, as well as the 'News' title. In my previous research I noticed that most heading in rock music double page spreads are quotes from the artist in edgy and bold writing. Therefore for my heading I decided to have a quote from the artist: "I'm going to change rock forever". I thought that this was bold and dramatic, and also related to my target audience as it is their preffered style of music that she is going to change. I now needed to find a font, so I went back to dafont.com to find another suitable font. I came across one called Hard Rock which I thought looked gritty and bold and perfect for my title. Here it is:

I then opened Photoshop and created my heading. I put it in quotation marks to indicate that my artist said this. I made the word "ROCK" bigger than the rest of the heading and in deep red to grab my audiences attention and make them want to read on. The rest of the heading is in white to stand out from the dark background. I also put it on an angle like my main image to give it a quirky and edgy feel. Here it is:

I also needed to create a title for the page, so the readers know exactly what section of the magazine this is. In my contents I placed the "News" section right at the front of the magazine, which is where this article would fit in as it is the most important feature of the magazine and a cover feature. I noticed most magazines tend to put the title in the top left corner in small so it is not distracting. I decided to do this with mine too. I used the same font from my heading to tie it in and I also put the word 'NEWS' in the same deep red colour. I also added a link to the website as my target audience is likely to spend a lot of time on the internet. This small tagline reads "Visit volume.co.uk for the latest exclusive music news daily'. I put this in white capitals in a plain arial font to keep it small but noticeable. I then put the whole thing in a black box with a white outline so it stood out. Here is the finished title:

I then placed both these features onto my double page spread. Here is my double page spread so far:

Double Page Spread Continued

Next I decided to place the main image on the page as I had already decided what this would be. First I opened the image on Photoshop ready to edit. Most of the magazines I had researched had either made the images into monochrome or sepia colours, and I very much liked the effect and overall look of this. So I decided to change my images into sepia as I felt this kind of tied in with the red, black and white colour scheme I was going to use, and also would look good on my film strip photos. I also edited the contrast and brightness to make it clear and bold, and also used the background eraser tool to get rid of the background. Here is how I edited my image:

Here is the before and after shot of my image:

I then placed the image onto my double page spread ready for the next few steps. Here is my double page spread so far:

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Title

As you can see my magazine uses a similar form of title to Kerrang! magazine. They are both bold, in capitals and have an added exclamation mark at the end for added impact. They both have music-related headings, Volume being the loudness of rock music and Kerrang! being the onomatopoeic sound of an electric guitar. The font I used called DCC Sharp Distress Black is of a similar style to that used my Kerrang! in the sense that they are both quite rough and rugged looking, like graffiti. However, I have developed my title by adding a white border and a more rough effect to the middle of it using Photoshop, so that I did not have to use a white background to make it stand out. I also created my own red sound-wave to sit behind the title, which relates to my title ‘Volume!’ as volume is measured in sound waves. This red wave also ties in with my red, black and white colour scheme. My title also challenges the conventions as it sits over my main image rather than being on a background, however this works due to the clever positioning of my image and the white border effect I used on the text to ensure it stands out while keeping my entire image visible to the audience.

People

The people used in my magazine follow some conventions of rock music magazines. They are dressed in typical rock clothing, red and black, t shirts, jeans and military boots. My model cover has a similar style to rock musician Hayley Williams, who appears in magazines such as Kerrang! and NME a lot. The people also look like musicians due to the props I have them use, and the positions I put them in. I also used real live musicians in my magazine, as I was lucky enough to attend rock music gigs to gather images. These are also used in many popular rock magazines as the target audience of magazines like Kerrang! regularly attend gigs and love live music. However, my people do challenge some conventions, as rock music magazines mostly have bands of males on their covers and throughout their magazines. I have challenged this by making a solo female rock artist my cover model and the feature of my double page spread. This would not affect the sale of my magazine though, as she is young, feisty and clearly a rock artist that my audience could easily relate to. I also think it’s a fresh look at rock music and an interesting change to the conventions. I did also include some males in my magazine on my contents page as my target audience includes both males and females with no bias and so will appeal to everyone.

Artist title

My main feature title featured on the front cover of my page follows some conventions of rock music magazines as you can see from this comparison of my magazine and Kerrang! magazine. I have used a clear from that is easy to read and added a drop shadow to make it stand out. The size of my font is also similar to the size of their font, as I felt this would attract the reader’s attention. I also used smaller text above and below my title to add more information to the story, we have both used a sentence about the artist’s connection with rock and fame. I have however developed the conventions in some way, as my background is not a neat black rectangle behind the smaller text, but a rugged black scribble. I think that this works as it gives off a rock edge and still look neat and makes the text stand out whilst appealing to the genre of the magazine. I think this adds some depth to the page and makes it more exciting and genre specific.

Suggestion of Genre/Props

I have used conventions of rock music magazines by including typical instruments and equipment of rock musicians as this will relate to my audience. I have included headphones, drumsticks, an amp and both electric and acoustic guitars throughout my magazine to connote rock. I also challenged this by taking some posed photographs of my model with the guitar, as most magazines have natural shots of musicians playing guitar. However I think this works as it gives my artist an edge and I have also mixed this in with natural pictures of my artist using the guitar as well as other music equipment.

Front Cover

My magazine has a similar target audience to that of Kerrang! magazine, so when doing my research I looked into this a lot and used it to loosely base my magazine on to ensure I was pleasing my target audiences wants and needs. I used certain conventions from the magazine in my own, for example the main title has a similar type font to Kerrang!’s, but I developed this convention by adding my own twist with the use of the white border to make it look more rugged. I also noticed that a lot of poster specials were used on the covers, so I created one too. However, I developed this by making it a live poster special as I had a lot of access to live bands already, plus my trip to LA allowed me to take some photographs of the rock band Biffy Clyro, who is also popular with my target audience. I challenged conventions by the placement of my text, as Kerrang!s text is usually quite regimented, where as my magazine features text on more edgy angles to make it more exciting.

Contents Page

As you can see in the above image my contents page took a lot of inspiration from Kerrang! magazines contents page. I used some conventions from this, such as the house grid style seen almost every week in Kerrang! magazine. This allowed me to set out each feature story clearly so the audience could navigate around the magazine easily. I used a main image of an artist looking more professional than on the front cover along with 5 smaller images. Plus, an index on the side of the page with clearly labelled headings and sub-headings that related to music such as ‘Album Reviews’. I also adopted the dark yellow colour used for headings and such, as I thought it was a bold colour that still connoted rock in some way. However, I challenged this by incorporating the same deep red colour as on my front page, as I thought it added more excitement to the page, linked it with my front cover and also connoted rock better. I also changed the position of the editor’s note as I thought that it would work better at the bottom of the page as one of the less important parts of the page. I also added a subscription offer to the page as I felt that this would appeal to the students in my audience as they are always looking to save money.

Double Page Spread

My double page spread is loosely based on the style of Kerrang!’s double page spread like the one featured above. I used the conventions of the house colours of red, black and white in my own magazine, just like I did on the front cover. This links all the parts of my magazine together and connotes rock music. Chose to use a similar layout to the MCR double page spread, as I felt it worked very effectively and would make a good template. Another thing I used was the small sidebar of song reviews and lyrics, as this related to my story perfectly. I also used a similar film strip of pictures to give the audience different views of my artist. I made my title a quote from the artist and in a similar rock-style font to the one featured about as I thought this was a bold attention-grabbing start to the page. I also developed some conventions, for example instead of having monochrome pictures I made them sepia, as I felt this tied in better with my colour scheme and added a bit more excitement to the page. My story also developed conventions, as it is written in a similar style to the MCR one, but I have added a bit more depth and detail to the description of songs. I challenged conventions in this by changing the point of view of my model to the audience. I had her looking at the camera rather than away, as I wanted her to relate to my audience more. I also did this in my small film strip of images as I wanted it to look as though she was opening up to the audience.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My magazine represents basically the profiles of the people in my target audience, this is young people aged 16-25, which a strong interest in rock music. In order to represent these people adequately I had to research into them and study their features. I had already research the profiles of the people who are represented in Kerrang! magazine as these are the same kind of people who would read my magazine. In this research I found that these people are highly interested in fashion and like to look good. I also saw in some magazine rock artists wearing military boots and vans on their feet, and red t shirts a lot. These are examples of the type of rock style clothing I found that they would wear:

In my research into who read Kerrang! I also noticed that the audience spend a lot of money on audio and music equipment each year, and also like to watch live music. I found that most of these people own guitars, headphones, amps and drums/drumsticks usually In most rock music magazines I have seen the use of instruments and music related props like this too. These are the kind of equipment most of the social groups would own/use regularly:

After researching many different rock music magazines I found a cover of Kerrang! that really stood out to me as representing the type of people who would read my magazine, and how I wanted to represent people from my magazine:

Hayley Williams is the perfect example of someone I want to represent via my magazine. She is the right age range and likes the same rock style of music as the people I am trying to represent and appeal to. She is a strong and confident female which is the look I was trying to achieve from my magazine front cover. When I was looking for a model to live up to this image I immediately thought of Ashley. She has the same rock look as Hayley, wears the same kind of rock styled clothes as her and generally has a similar confident feel to them as displayed by the images below:

As you can see, Ashley has a very similar style to Hayley. They are both wearing fashionable red t shirts, which coincidently connote rock and tie in with the house colours of both Kerrang! and my own magazine. I had to be exact and specific when deciding who to chose as a model as the magazine industry is getting increasingly competitive and I needed to chose someone who would best represent my target audience, reach out to them, get them to buy my magazine and therefore make it a success.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Within my research of magazines, I also had a look at what institutions publish them. I looked at IPC media a lot, as it produces over 60 music brands including NME that I directly researched as it is a rock magazine. It reaches over 26 million people in print alone and therefore is very influential to UK music. Here is some information I got from their website that helped me learn about them:

Here is another part of their website about the rock music magazine NME, which influenced my own magazine:

I have also looked at Bauer Media Group, who produce magazines that I have also researched such as Kerrang! and Q magazine. These are slightly more large scale then IPC, as they produce over 300 magazine and distribute magazines over 15 countries. They also have a turnover of around 2 billion euros. Here is some information I gathered from their website:

My magazine is heavily influenced and resembles Kerrang! a lot, our target audience and music style is very similar. For this reason I thought despite Bauer Media being bigger than IPC media, it would not be good for magazine sales if they was to distribute my magazine as it would have to compete with Kerrang!, which already has a strong fan base who would be hard to overrule. Therefore, since IPC media do not have a magazine quite like mine, there is a niche within their publishings for my magazine to fit in, and I think it would sell the best and reach my target audience best under their distribution.
