Evaluation question 1

evaluation question 2- How does your media product represent particular social groups

The first image is from Q magazine and the second one is what I took and used in my contents page. I tried to make my model stand and look like the people in the Q issue so that it stood out when people looked at the page. The social group I was trying to target was the rock/indie group which would be people like my model who would listen to the band shown in the Q picture.

evaluation question 3- What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

The compnay that might distrube my magazine would be insitutions like Emap or ICP.

evaluation question 4- Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for my media product would be indie/rock type. People like Ellie Goulding are the type of people I would want to read my magazine. People like her would shop in shops such as Topshop or Urban Outfitters. They would listen to bands like The Courteeners or maybe rock music like Paramore. The TV programmes they would watch or like The Hills or Jersey Shore. I believe they would buy my magazine because I think that it looks appealing and the image on the front stands out. I also think that because I have put pictures of exitings bands on the front that would attract people to pick up the magazine. I did some research on bauermedia website on kerrang and there audience profile says that the people that read their magazine are individually minded, independant of thought and musically experienced. It says they are an audience defined by attitude, passion and loyalty.

evaluation question 5- How did you attract/address your audience?

To connect with my audience I tried to make sure that the clothes I wore and what my other models wore in my magazine where up to date. I did this because I wanted the style of my magazine to come through in the models I used. Also teen music magazines always tend to have slang words so that they can relate better with the audience, so on my double page interview I tried to make sure that the way I answered questions would be the way that a teen would answer. I also madfe sure that the bands I mentioned were indie/rock bands as these were the type of bands I thought my audience would listen to.
I wrote about bands like YouMeAtSix and The Wanted because I thought they woud be bands that readers of my magazine would listen to.

evaluation question 6- What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

When creating my front cover or my magazine I used Photoshop. At first I found it quite diffcult to use but once I got started I found it alot easier.

For my contents page and double page spread I used the desktop
publisher -Microsoft Publisher. I found this quite easy to use because I had used it many times before so I didnt find it too difficult.

I also used Internet Explorer for my research as well as blogger for uploading what I was creating. For the fonts used in my magazine I downloaded them from the website DaFont.com.

evaluation question 7- Looking back at your prelimiary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

This is my prelim front cover and contents page. On my prelim front cover I didnt really know how to use photoshop so the cover looks very basic and the colours are all block colours and don't really blend very well. I think my contents opage is a little better but still everything just seem to plain and the page doesnt seem to "click".

evaluation question 7 continued.....

This is my finished music magazine. Since my prelim I have learned more about the various effects on Photoshop so I knew how to use more of the tools. I also had inspiration from kerrang! magazine so I had more ideas about how to make my magazine appeal to the audience I wanted. When making my prelim I didnt really think about models and location but with my music magazine I gave it alot more thought because I knew that I wanted to reach a certain audience so I knew my magazine had to look a certain way.

Font's

Fonts I have used for my front cover Defused, Cooper, Bauhaus and Lucinda Sans.
These fonts are very different because the font defused, which I downloaded from DaFont, looks very different because it looks very rocky and rough whereas the other fonts I have chosen are more simple and plain because I didn't want the magazine to look to 'busy'.
For my contents page I have used the fonts Defused , Harabara and Century Gothic. I chose these fonts because I thought that they looked quite quirky and I liked the way Harbara looked really 'fun'.
On my double page spread I have used the font airplanes in the night sky and harabara. I chose these fonts because airplanes in the night sky looks like a girly font and the title is "Just a girl" so I thought it fitted the look well.

Bar Code

The next thing I did was insert a bar code into the right hand corner of the magazine. I got the bar code from the internet and cropped it to size and then inserted it onto my front cover. It is essential to have a barcode on my magazine because otherwise my magazine would not be able to be sold.

Front cover so far

This is my front cover so far. I have chosen the picture that I want to be on the front and have edited the picture so that it looks better and stands out more on the page. I have also added a black bar running along the top because I noticed that on other magazine covers they mostly used this on their covers too. I have wrote in the box along the top in white bold font because I thought that it would make it stand out alot more, I have also written it in all in capital letters because I think that it looked alot more dramatic and appealing. I have also added my title near the top of the picture in big font and in black. Also on my front cover I have zoomed in on the original photo so that it looks more dramatic on the cover. Another thing I have done is add a bar along the bottom with names of existing bands in to appeal to my target audience. I have also inserted a picture of miley cyrus and I am going to upload two more pictures next to it to connect with my target audience better.

Front cover- The Title

The title I chose for my magazine was Rivals. I wanted it to be at the top of the magazine so that it stood out. I got the font for my title from DaFont website. It was called "Defused", I chose this one because I thought that it looked very rockish and it would look good on my front cover. I decided to do the title in black as I thought that it would stand out more because the background was very busy with all the trees in the back ground. I liked the style of the writing because it looked alot like the style of other magazine titles like "Kerrang" or "NME" which is what I wanted it to look like.

Props and costumes

I had to use a light when I was taking my photos because the pictures came out very dark. Also here is the location for my front cover photo.

For the front cover I wore a a simple black dress and black army boots with a leather jacket, I chose this because I thought that looked more rockish than the other outfit I was going to choose. I tried different positions in different locations but the one I liked best was when I was stood in front of the tree because I thought that it looked more effective there. Also because my background was mostly green it made it easier for me to stand out wearing my black clothes. I also tried some pictures in front of a plain white background but on the pictures the background looked a more off white colour which I thought that for a front of a music magazine wouldnt look as good as the other photo I chose because I wanted it too look more rocky.

For the double page spread I wore plain skinny jeans with a denim jacket, I wore this as I thought that it looked indie and it would look good on the photos. For some of my photos I went into the trees to take some there but the pictures I liked best were the ones when I was on the skate ramps in the skate park. I tried to look serious and more angry because I didnt want my magazine look too girly because the image was going to take up the whole of one page and therefore wanted it to look rockish.

Photoshoot- Double Page Spread

For the picture on my double page spread I decided to use me as the model because I am the picture used on the front cover. I decided to use some of the pictures I took from a skate park because I really liked the graphitti in the background.

Photoshoot- Front cover

During the half term holidays I went to Ireland and decided to take my pictures there. I took it near the trees because I thought that the lighting was good and i thought it would look good for a front cover of a magazine. I decided to use myself as the model because i knew better what I wanted my picture to look like so it would be alot easier. I decided to wear mostly black because it looked alot more rockish but i kept my make-up quite plain and simple.

Magazine Titles

I had many different ideas for titles of my magazine. I wanted a title that was like one word like Kerrang! because it's catchy and well known and that is what i want my magazine to be like. I also like the magazine name NME because it is only three letters long but it makes a big impression on people and is very well known. I thought of different titles such as:
  • Scandalous - I think this connotates bad behaviour and how something is shocking.
  • Rampage- I think this makes you think of something or somone going crazy or being violent.
  • B-Zurk- I like this title because i have shortened it from Berzerk to make it more edgy and indie/rock. This also makes me think of somone being violent which is what most rock music is about being crazy and different.
  • Up-Beat- This is a good title because it is different and lively. However I don't think it connotates rock or indie music like i want my magazine title to.
  • Boomin'- I think this title is really 'bouncy' and lively but as the up beat one i dont think it makes you think of rock/indie genre of music.
  • Rivals- I like this title because it makes me think of people being competitive and when there is rivalry there is usually anger.

I like these names because they are very striking and give a good impression. There only one word long but are very catchy. Also I think that most of the titles connotate the type of music genre that I want people to think. I think the title I most like is Rivals because i think it would be good for a masgazine and it connotates the genre of music I want people to percieve. I don't want my magazine title to be too girly and femine because i want it to connotate the rock genre of music.

Internet Research

Before starting my magazine i decided to do some reasearch. I found out that Kerrang! magazine cost £2.20 and is published weekly. It is a rock magazine and artist usually feature on the front cover. The lead singer of the band is usually positioned further forward than the rest of the singers and is usually in the centre. Kerrang! magazine has a total circulation of 43,000. I also found out that Q magazine costs £3.99 which personally I think is overpriced for a magazine. I also found out that it is published monthly with a total circulation of 130,179.

Audience Feedback

I asked an equal number of boys and girl so that would be accurate and reliable. The result si got back where that most people enjoy reading Kerrang! magazine. They would prefer to pay between £2.00-£2.50 and normally shop at tophshop/topman and River Island. I believe this is a good result because my magazine is going to be and indie/rock magazine and these are the type of shops that sell clothes representing that type of music. Another result I got from my questionnaire is that most people I asked listen to Indie music. Overall my questionnaire was a success because the results I got really helped me to figure out what type of music the age group that i want to taregt listen to. From the questionnaire i have realised that the people I asked have got the same opinion as I have about what music genre would be good for my magazine
